What is interpreting?

Interpreting is mainly divided into consecutive and simultaneous, with different variants within each category. This division depends on the way the speaker and interpreter interact and the way the interpretation is conveyed to the recipients.

Simultaneous interpretations take place simultaneously with the speaker's speech. This means that the interpreter delivers the content in real time, without interrupting the speaker. This type of interpretation is commonly used during conferences, international meetings, and meetings of officials and politicians. The most common form is cabin interpretation, where the interpreter works in a soundproof booth. The speaker's speech reaches him through headphones, and he himself transmits the interpretation into a microphone, which the recipients also hear through headphones.

Another type of simultaneous interpreting is whispered interpreting, used during trainings, workshops, speeches and presentations. The interpreter translates the speaker's statements in real time, in a quiet voice, which works well in small groups of up to 3-4 people who do not speak the speaker's language. It is important that the interpreter does not interrupt the speaker's speech, hence the limitation of the number of listeners.

What types of interpreting are there?

  • unseen translation – this is an oral translation of a written text without the possibility of reading the entire text in advance, these are most often official or court documents, therefore they are performed by sworn translator
  • conference interpreting – they are carried out for international institutions (usually as multilingual meetings) as well as for the private market, where they are bilingual meetings
  • consecutive interpreting – the translator translates the utterance only when the speaker finishes speaking and says the entire translation; in order to accurately reproduce the utterance, the translator uses a system of notes
  • whispered translation – the translator translates the speaker’s statement in a quiet voice against the background of a small group of listeners
  • translation lioaison – in contrast to consecutive interpreting, the interpreter translates single sentences or short statements of the speaker, e.g. during technical presentations or hearings
